(By Ed Ryan) As many long-time podcasters pointed out at Podfest in Orlando earlier this month, just about every month someone announces they are going to be the Netflix of podcasting.
Last month is was Luminary, which hasn’t even launched yet, and plans to charge $8.. per month for content. This month it’s a company called Brew.
Brew is an app for podcasts. The Brew website says: “Podcasting as a medium has exploded in creativity. However, the technology remains unadapted. We are reinventing how users listen to podcasts, with a focus on supporting the creators. Because when you support the creators for the great work they do, you are helping them produce more of it.”
Brew charges $4.99 per month. The company says “The monthly subscription goes towards the creators on Brew that you listen to, ensuring that they are able to focus on producing more of the content you love. The less they worry about monetizing, the more they can focus on creating.”
The goal of the company is to help podcasters get paid for their shows. You can sign up on Brew and the company pays creators based on their number of unique listens. Brew CEO Jijo Sunny tells TechCrunch, “Podcasts, by nature, have a low barrier to entry and that’s the best thing about podcasts, right? Anyone anywhere can set up a podcast. To be a Netflix for audio, it has to be for all creators, not celebrities like Trevor Noah.”
Brew has raised $400,000 in funding for its new app., which for now is only available for iPhone. The company says it will be available on Android devices in April..
