Marketwatch interviewed Wondery CEO Hernan Lopez about the podcast to TV phenomenon taking place. Lopez told writer Jeanett Settemnra he hopes all the original shows the company produces have a life beyond podcasting. “You’re seeing more and more TV shows based on books, comic books and now podcasts, and I think podcasts in particular are growing. We structure a series already thinking about what they have in common with TV shows.”
Podcasts that have been turned into TV show already include: Homecoming staring Julie Roberts (Amazon), Dirty John (Bravo) and 2 Dope Queens (HBO).
Lopez says Wondery is crafting shows the same way as a TV writer would. “Our shows tend to be evergreen and story-based. We want clear conflict, clear characters and we want a beginning, a middle and an end; and we want high stakes set out in a way where listeners could easily identify themselves with one or more characters.”
Marketwatch states that the top four genres that brought in more than half of the $314 million in podcast advertising revenue were arts and entertainment; technology; news and politics; and business. And podcasts are the fastest-growing segment in the $60 billion global audio industry.
