FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting) intern Forest Hunt wrote a lengthy thinkpiece about the effects of media consolidation in podcasting that cites over a dozen stories from other sources and laments the loss of independence in “The New Podcast Oligopoly.”
The crux of Hunt’s story comes down to this quote: “Publishers gain a lot from being owned by one of the new oligopolists, but it comes at a cost.”
He’s not the only one lately thinking about the larger effects of this rapid growth in commercial podcasting and merging of the last few years. Evo Terra over at Podcast Pontifications has been on top of this for a while with a constantly updated list that he blogs about.
