It’s encouraging that after all these years since the original Star Trek show launched in 1966, fandom is still bringing people together.

The Syfy Sistas is a website started by a group of black female friends to explore their love of all things Star Trek in a fun way. It started with a blog and now they have a podcast as well.

Producer Subrina Wood says SyFy Sistas “has to do with creating a place to escape surprisingly toxic people (I hear you Chrissy Tiegen) of the nerdy, male-dominated, world of science fiction.

But what we learned after the launch was that some of our best allies were…nerdy males in the world of science-fiction! Ahh, don’t you love a happy ending?”

They started their podcast on December 24, 2020, talking about Hanelle Culpepper who just won an NAACP Image Award for Best Director for the series Star Trek Series Picard. Also, SyFy Sistas was just listed as #6 in the FictionHorizon.com List of the Best Star Trek Podcasts of 2021.

They discuss sci-fi movies, books, TV series, conventions, and podcasts from a black female point of view, and each member of the group is referred to as a “sista”. In addition to Sista Subrina their photo blog shows the other “team members” Sistas Yvette, Fran T., J.D., and Tamia Harper, co-founder, and COO.
