According to a new report released from radio company Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights, Spotify is now the number one source for podcasts in the United States. The study says Apple is now third.
The two companies surveyed 600 people for the survey. The say that as of October 2021 36% of the 600 people responded that Spotify is how they listen to podcasts. In July of 2019, Spotify was in 3rd place at 30%
Next on the list in this latest study is YouTube at 34%, although some would argue that YouTube is not really a podcast platform. In July of 2019 YouTube was at 33%.
In 2019 this study had Apple in the lead at 38%, however as of October of this year, Cumulus and Signal Hill say Apple is third with 27% of all listening.
Facebook did not even register as a platform for podcasts, according to this study. The 600 podcast listeners were surveyed between September 30th and October 29th 2021.
“Spotify has now become the number one listening source for podcasts in the U.S. The sands are shifting under our feet,” said Jeff Vidler, President and Founder of Signal Hill Insights. “The big three podcast listening oligarchy – YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify – now have a 63% listening share, up from 55% in 2019.”
