That’s what Libsyn VP of Podcast Relations Rob Walch said on a podcast panel yesterday. In fact, he said “wrong” three times. And he said it emphatically.
Walch’s comments came following a question about where consumers are going to listen to podcasts. The audience member said Edison Research showed that more people are going to YouTube now to discover podcasts.
Walch quickly shot down that notion. “Some of the Edison stuff has been wrong, wrong, wrong. I look at actual numbers, not studies. The number one place people find podcasts is Apple, not YouTube.”
For the record, we reached out to Tom Webster to try to get the actual stat from the Edison study that the audience member was referring to. Webster told PBJ that stat about YouTube did not come from Edison’s research. In fact, on page 24 of Edison’s Podcast Consumer report, YouTube is not even mentioned as a way to even occasionally discover podcasts.
There was a presentation made back at the April NAB Show that said YouTube was the #1 source for podcasts, however, that study was done by the University of Florida and Futuri Media, and it was widely panned by the podcasting industry.
