Ear Hustle, the award-winning podcast about life in the prison system is now a book launching October 12th, 2021. It was the first series to be created and produced inside the U.S. prison system.
The series launched in 2017 when Nigel Poor was volunteering as a teacher at San Quentin for the Prison University Project and met Earlonne Woods who had been sentenced to 31 years in prison in 1997. They discovered they shared an interest in storytelling and with no prior experience entered and won a contest put by Radiotopia and PRX looking for new shows. The show was since been nominated for a Peabody and Pulitzer for its unflinching look at the realities of daily life for the incarcerated.
Earlonne’s sentence was commuted in 2018 by then California Governor Jerry Brown and the show continues to this day.
