Daniel Delgado just launched the second season of his storytelling podcast The Industry. The podcast goes into lesser-known behind-the-scenes Hollywood stories. Daniel has been hosting a radio show on public radio/online since 2006, before venturing out into this show. Here’s our PBJ Spotlight on Daniel Delgado and his podcast The Industry.

PBJ: Why did you launch this podcast? Daniel Delgado: I absolutely love podcasts. I’m fortunate enough to have an office job where I can listen all day. After listening to a number of storytelling podcasts (Radiolab, Snap Judgement, etc.) I was wondering if I could do one myself. I decided to do a show about movies, because that’s where my interests lie.

PBJ: When was your first show? Daniel Delgado: June 28, 2018 was the first episode. This new season just started July 31, though.

PBJ: Where are you getting all of your information? Daniel Delgado: Online. Reading lots of articles. Newspapers.com is a great resource. Google books is also great, and free! Sometimes in an episode, most of the information comes from whoever I’m interviewing.

PBJ: How much time does each episode take? Daniel Delgado: It varies depending on how easily I can get a guest and how motivated I am. I would say about two weeks is the average. One guest took me about two months to get an interview with.

PBJ: How long does it take you to write each episode and how many pages of writing is it? Daniel Delgado: This is definitely the hardest part and my least favorite. Each episode is about 8-12 pages long. Here’s where procrastination can really kick in. I would say it takes about 2-3 days for me to finish a script.

PBJ: How much editing are you doing? Daniel Delgado: A lot. There’s interviews to chop up, clips to work in, music to lay down, and then my narration. I actually enjoy the edit a lot, but it’s an all-day affair.

PBJ: What is your goal with the show? Daniel Delgado: To get listeners is the first goal. Of course, I would love it if I was one of those podcasters fortunate enough to quit their jobs because they have 8,000 patrons on Patreon. Really though, I would love to be in the podcast business, so if this show could double as a calling card to get a job in the industry, that would be great. Though, I have to say I am enjoying just making these shows.

PBJ: How are your downloads/listens? Daniel Delgado: Nothing to brag about! This newest episode has been out for a day and has the best single total I’ve had, but even so it’s not very much.

PBJ: How are you marketing/getting the word out? Daniel Delgado: I’m terrible at it, honestly. I’m making a much bigger attempt with this second season, though. I have a new website, cover art for each new episode, making headiners to use on social media, and have been annoying everyone I know about it. I’ve also been pestering places like PBJ to feature the show in some way.

PBJ: Are you making any money? Daniel Delgado: Not yet!

PBJ: Describe your equipment setup. (See photo at right) Daniel Delgado: I’ve been doing a small radio show out of my place since 2006, so most of my equipment is on the old side. Mic: Samson Q7 Mixer: Yamaha MG06X Recorder: Zoom 4Hn Editing program: Audacity
