The Verge reports on a phenomenon that’s become something of a sore spot in the podcasting industry – paywalled podcasts reposted for free on apps like Castbox and Anchor because of the open nature of RSS feeds.
They spoke to two sources about shutting down the illegal feeds on Castbox. “It’s a little bit like playing whack-a-mole with them,” says one source, who asked to remain anonymous because of their ongoing work in the space.
Other industry insiders acknowledge the difficulty of the problem in general, “restricting access to content is always going to be tricky,” says Justin Jackson, co-founder of podcast hosting service Transistor.fm.
Ultimately the Verge believes the problem of piracy in podcasting isn’t going to go away even with Spotify and Apple introducing the subscription model.
