Slate premiered the first episode of a new narrative American history podcast under the Slow Burn banner called One Year. Each season of the new show will focus on a year, and the first season is about 1977.

Slow Burn host Josh Levin will explore stories from that year that have seemed forgotten in the mainstream such as Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children” campaign from the first episode. The 1977 season will look at how change seemed in the air with Jimmy Carter as the fight for equal rights for gays, Blacks, and women came to the forefront. Just like in Slow Burn they will connect the past to the present and show why these stories are important.

Upcoming episodes include:

  • Marijuana: The beginning of the war on drugs.

  • Roots: The miniseries adaptation of Alex Haley’s book tracing his family history back to slavery becomes a cultural phenomenon.

  • Laetrile: A quack cancer remedy called Laetrile becomes a national sensation.

  • Mary Shane: The Chicago White Sox hire Mary Shane, the first female play-by-play announcer.

  • The Jesus tortilla: Maria Rubio discovers the image of Jesus burned in a tortilla one morning in her New Mexico kitchen.

  • Elvis is Dead (or Is He?): After the death of Elvis Presley, myths develop that he’s still alive.
