The charges date back to when Hernan Lopez, now CEO of Wondery, was an executive with 21st Century Fox. Lopez and Carlos Martinez were indicted in Brooklyn, accused of paying millions of dollars in bribes for media and marketing rights to soccer matches.

The charges include wire fraud and money laundering. Soccer’s governing body FIFA has been long under investigation for being corrupt.

The indictment says Lopez, who was CEO of a Latin American Fox subsidiary, and Martinez as President, “worked with Full Play to bribe officials at CONMEBOL, the South American soccer federation, in exchange for rights to events including the Copa Libertadores club tournament.”

In several published reports, attorneys for both Lopez and Martinez say they plan to fight the charges and the government has no case.
