Lava for Good Podcasts will be recognized by the first annual Signal Listener’s Choice Awards with nominations for two of its shows, Wrongful Conviction with Maggie Freleng and Wrongful Conviction.

The Signal Awards honor and celebrate people and content that raise the bar for podcasting.

Wrongful Conviction with Maggie Freleng was nominated for an episode highlighting the case of Alisha Burns, a victim of sex trafficking who was coerced by her co-defendant to plead guilty to a murder she didn’t commit. Hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and producer Maggie Freleng, the episode is a finalist in the Limited Series & Specials: Public Service & Activism category.

“It was important to me to tell Alisha’s story because she faced unimaginable horrors at the hands of her sex trafficker — first he groomed her as a teenage sex worker and then when he pressured her into accepting a plea that sent her to prison for nearly 17 years,” said Freleng. “I hope that having this episode showcased as a Signal Awards finalist will help bring attention to what far too many women experience at the hands of our unjust criminal legal system.”

Hosted by Lava for Good CEO, celebrated music executive, author, philanthropist and justice advocate Jason Flom, Wrongful Conviction is a finalist in the Public Service & Activism category.
