We’ve been hearing a lot about podcasts making the move to Television lately and how that is the ultimate success of a podcast. The reality is it takes a great story, a lot of production, and a lot of money to turn a podcast into a TV series.

Getting everything to align perfectly like that is a pipe dream for the average podcaster. Poynter has a great in-depth piece quoting Wondery CEO Hernan Lopez who says “We’re creating stories that need to resonate and support themselves financially as podcasts.” His point: The pathway from podcast to video is far from a given.

Lopez says podcasting is limited by the advertising pie, and the limitations on the numbers of advertisers have prompted some outlets to cut back on podcast resources, according to Poynter.

David Schutz is the director of content for the South Florida Sun Sentinel and a Wondery partner on the true-crime series “Felonious Florida.” He tells Poynter that breaking even with podcasting is not enough. “Newsrooms have to be careful on what they bite off. If you do it right, it’s going to be expensive. And remember, podcasts are free for listeners. How to do you produce one of these things at a reasonable cost and make money off it? We’re still learning.”
