Those are the words of wrestling superstar and successful podcaster Chris Jericho who says he always wanted to do a talk show. Jericho has been podcasting for six years now and says the medium gives him the capability to talk to anyone he finds interesting.
Jericho was part of a podcasting panel at The Radio Show in Dallas last week, which had more of a focus on podcasting than ever before. Jericho said what listeners love the most about podcasting is that hosts get to go with the flow. “You don’t get to do that on the radio where you only have three minutes to talk.” Jericho’s show is called Talk is Jericho which is backed by Westwood One (a radio company owned by Cumulus).
Jericho’s first-ever guest was Adam Carolla. That’s when Jericho knew that podcasting was not the wave of the future, “it’s the wave of now.” He also admitted it’s not easy being a podcast host. “What helped me get the show out to the masses was when he joined Westwood One and Cumulus started promoting the show on its radio stations. He also believes he been doing so well because his show is free to the consumer. “My lat company had a paywall and the show bombed. My back episodes are huge now. There is no need for a paywall at this stage of the game.”
On the topic of advertising, Jericho says the big advertisers like McDonalds and Starbucks, not using podcasts now, are still trying to figure this out. “They need to realize these shows are appointment listening. We have a captive audience and these shows are up there forever.” Jericho said his goal is to make that sixty second live read as entertaining as the content of his show. “My personal touch is on those ads. I want to make them sixty seconds of entertainment with the advertising included.”
