Rob Walch is out with his latest podcast stats. The Libsyn VP of Podcaster Relations and Podcast Business Journal Editorial Board Member says, for the first time, Apple, where the majority of podcasts are downloaded, has dropped below 60%.
Make no mistake, that is still a massive number and Apple remains the leader, by far, when it comes to the destination consumers go to listen to podcasts. Here’s how the numbers came in for the month of May, according to Walch, who pulls the stats from Libsyn.
May Downloads (not including Spotify): Apple podcasts and iTunes 59.9%. Apple was followed by Spotify (10%), Overcast (2.9%), Castbox (2.5%), Stitcher (2%), Podcast Addict (1.6%), Google (1.3%), and Pocketcast (1.2%).
83.7% of downloads in May went directly to mobile devices (up from 83.1 % in April). Computer downloads were down slightly to 16.1% and the Smart Speaker category was below 1%.
The top five countries for downloads in May (not including Spotify): United States - 63.8% Canada - 5.2 % UK - 5% Australia - 3.6 Sweden - 2.9
And the Spotify country breakdown: United States 45.9% Brazil 7.6% U.K. 7% Canada 5.3% German 4.3%
