Those are the words of Jim Collison on the latest episode of Ask The Podcast Coach with Dave Jackson. Collison has some advice for podcasters on what they should focus on and it has nothing to do with finding famous people to have on your show.
Collison says it drives him nuts when podcasters say they’re going to launch a show by going after influencers as their content. “It’s super lazy. Find interesting people. Could it work? Totally. People have done it. It’s just lazy.”
Here’s Collison’s advice. When you do get followers of your show, take care of them. And what he means is give them the content they expect from you. Ask them for input. Respond to them. He said on his show Home Gadget Geeks he gets listeners that help him find guests – because they are extremely engaged in the content he’s delivering. “Don’t get so focused on the crowds that you missed the disciples. Take good care of them.”
The discussion between Collison and Jackson on this topic is about 11 minutes in HERE. And, of course, you should be listening to Dave and Jim every week if you want to become a better podcaster.
What do you think? Is hunting down famous people to interview on your show lazy?
Comments:
If the focus of the program revolves around getting “famous” people as the interview, how is that “lazy?” I think it depends on the subject matter as to who gets asked to be on the program–be they “famous” or not. “interesting people” as the author states should be the number one reason why anyone gets asked to appear on a talkshow.

I agree with this, IF the podcaster thinks that by having a famous person on their show means that it will automatically get tons of downloads without any more work. That’s lazy. I’ve had more known people on my show (in my field) and lesser known ones and it was the lesser known who promoted my show so much and got me a lot more downloads. I don’t go for “famous” people, they wouldn’t fit my show’s subject anyway. But I don’t go out of my way to get elite runners either. I want to talk to regular runners, people like you and me. It’s far more interesting to me. And they are so tickled to be asked to be on a show that they were do a lot of footwork to get everyone they know to listen.
