(By Troy Price) I am writing this right now in a hotel just off the Las Vegas Strip. I want to share two podcasts that I listened to that helped me prepare for this trip and then share some resulting thoughts that we should all consider as we create a new podcast.
Before I came to Vegas I listened to the Professor Slots podcast (www.professorslots.com). I learned by listening to Professor Slots that everything I thought I knew about slot machines became outdated in 2012. On his podcast, he describes the seismic changes that took place in 2012 and how current business practices in modern casinos can be exploited to help the odds of winning on slot machines. A definite listen for those thinking about any Vegas trip or jaunt to a local casino.
Before I came to Vegas I made my entertainment plans by binge listening to the PodKats! podcast (https://www.reviewjournal.com/podcasts/podcast-podkats/). John Katsilometes is a local entertainment columnist and just started his podcast in late 2018. He reviews shows playing in Vegas, but also talks about the people behind the shows. I was torn between going to a Cirque show or something new. Listening to an interview of the actors in the new show helped me make up my mind.
These are two great podcasts that have made my trip to Las Vegas better. Also, these podcasts have taught me something that I can apply to my podcasting efforts.
Professor Slots talks about the systems that I can use to improve my slots play. He reminds me of the podcast professionals that share the podcast production systems and other best practices. “Johnny Kats” presents the heart and passions of the producers and actors of the world-class entertainment scene here in Vegas. That reminds me of the passionate podcasters who continue to produce quality shows online. However, Professor Slots also shares that even the best systems do not guarantee success. Likewise, Johnny Kats also shares that stage productions with talented, passionate actors and producers close all the time.
Here is how all that could help us as podcasters. Remember that luck is a factor in your podcast’s success. You know there are podcast production and promotion systems out there that you can follow. You also know that you need to have passion for the topic your show covers and you need the talent to produce a great show. But just like when vacationers sit down at a slot machine or show business professionals go out on stage, you could do everything according to a time-tested system and be amazingly passionate about your podcast and still fail.
There is some measure of liberation in this knowledge. If you produce a show and it fails, it does not mean you did anything wrong. If it fails it does not mean you deviated too far from some system that you should have followed. If it fails it does not mean you are not passionate enough about your topic. Sometimes podcasts inexplicably fail. Sometimes shows succeed just because the timing is right. Sometimes shows succeed just because it taps into some undiscovered zeitgeist. Sometimes things inexplicably work out for a podcaster.
The role that luck plays with your podcast is one of the most exciting things about putting a show together. Sure, follow a system – it will probably help your show. Sure, follow your passions – it will probably make your show better. But luck will play a factor in your success. You should make plans in case your little podcast gets lucky and your show explodes. You should also make an exit strategy in case your show is unlucky.
I make these kinds of plans every time I start a new podcast, and every time I come to Vegas.
