Google Podcasts Product Manager Zack Reneau-Wedeen says as of today when you’re searching for a podcast about a topic on Google the search engine will show you playable episodes in Search results alongside web pages, news, images and videos. This is great news for the podcasting industry. And it’s one step closer to having podcasts in the Google spotlight.
Ultimately the industry would love to have podcasts listed in the top Google toolbar (see below). Right now the word podcasts doesn’t even show up in the ‘more’ dropdown. For new podcasters will surely be happy with Google shedding new light on podcasts. Wedeen says podcast episodes will be “surfaced” based on Google’s understanding of what’s being talked about on a podcast, so you can find even more relevant information about a topic in audio form. Soon, you won’t necessarily need the term “podcast” in your search to see episodes, making podcast discovery simpler across Search.
Wedeen also says as part of Google’s work to help podcasters build audiences and grow their businesses, the company will soon add the ability for publishers to specify where you can listen to their podcasts, such as other apps or websites.
