Freaknik: A Discourse On A Paradise Lost tells the story of a celebratory spring break party in Atlanta – started by the glitterati of African-American college students over the course of 15 years – that went wrong. The trouble began in 1990 with the event having grown exponentially from its humble roots, and allowing the general public and outside visitors in. That year the size of the event was around 200,000 people and disrupted the city. Panic set in and crimes – some violent – were committed. Ironically, of the major crimes committed during the Freaknic weekends, less than 1 percent were committed by college students.
This documentary podcast explores Freaknik through the eyes of the artists, students, journalists, business owners, and politicians that experienced the phenomenon, while unpacking the rich history of Atlanta.
Produced by Mass Appeal & Endeavor Audio. Freaknik: A Discourse on a Paradise Lost is executive produced by Chris Colbert & DCP Entertainment, and created, produced, and hosted by Christopher Frierson.
