Facebook has announced that they’re launching live audio rooms and podcasts in their app on June 21st. Their live audio rooms feature is similar to Clubhouse and could be used for podcasts in the future while their initial release of podcasts is extremely limited.
The bulk of their post was about live audio rooms and letting listeners know that various public figures like Reggie Watts and Joe Buden will be participating. Listeners can receive notifications about live audio rooms they subscribe to and “raise their hand” to participate in an audio discussion also like Clubhouse.
They announced these limited releases for their podcast launch: “Joe Budden of The Joe Budden Podcast; “Jess Hilarious” of Carefully Reckless from The Black Effect Podcast Network and iHeartRadio; Keltie Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jac Vanek of the LadyGang; and Nicaila Matthews Okome of Side Hustle Pro.”
They say that people “people can listen to podcasts while browsing Facebook, via a mini player or full-screen player experience with playback options” although these do not appear to be available at the time of this writing. They say you can listen to “select podcast creators on their Facebook Pages, as well as in News Feed” while other updates will roll out later this summer like the ability to create and share podcast clips.
