The Orange Tree podcast was created by college seniors Haley Butler and Tinu Thomas at the University of Texas-Austin in 2019. The hosts researched the 2005 murder of Jennifer Cave at the Orange Tree Condominiums close to the university.
Fifteen years ago, 21-year-old Jennifer Cave went out with her friend Colton Pitonyak to celebrate getting a job offer at a law firm. Friends said they saw Jennifer leave downtown with Colton, but she never showed up for her first day of work. Two days later, Jennifer’s body was found at The Orange Tree, a condo complex in a student neighborhood near the University of Texas at Austin.
Thomas and Butler started working on the story when they were journalism students at the college. They attended classes just a few blocks from the crime scene.
