Those are the topics Traci Long-DeForge takes a crack at as she answers three more questions from Podcast Business Journal readers.

How do I create a podcast episode with breaking news or current events in addition to my regular interview format? Should I release it as a bonus episode? Traci: Adding breaking news and highlighting current events is a smart way to position yourself as an expert. Build an even higher trust factor with your audience by providing your own perspective and showcasing your expertise on the issue. These Special Episodes can be released as bonus podcasts in your feed outside of your normal release schedule. You may even want to produce a new intro for these but always use the same close for consistency. Bonus Episodes are a great way to increase your download numbers since these episodes will also automatically download to your followers.

Is it possible to niche your show content down too far and risk making your audience smaller? Traci: Many people assume niching down your podcast topic is going to narrow your audience and make your show less discoverable. The counter point is niching down is a great way to target your optimal audience more directly and attract highly loyal and engaged listeners. I’m an advocate for really honing in on your ideal listener and then going another layer deep and then one more layer deep. For example, you can start with a podcast concept targeted to Entrepreneurs then you can niche down into Women Entrepreneurs and then Wellness for Women Entrepreneurs. This will actually help you with discovery because now you can be found in search for podcasts about entrepreneurship, women in business and wellness practices vs getting lost in the very popular business category of podcasts.

Should I be uploading my audiograms to YouTube? Traci: Yes, in addition to uploading your full episodes on YouTube you can also upload your audiograms. An audiogram combines a clip of audio with the still image of your episode tile to create your video and you can upload it to your YouTube channel.

A PodHive member shared this week they’d gotten over 9000 hits on their most recent audiogram! Make sure you post a link to that specific podcast episode (not the podcast) in the description text of the post so you can provide quick access to the entire episode

Bonus Tip: YouTube Shorts. As long as you keep your videos below 59 seconds, your video may be tagged as a “short” and could end up on the “shorts shelf” which is the equivalent of the discovery/explore section on Instagram and Tik Tok.
