Associate Producer – History Podcast

APM Studios is hiring a project-based contract Producer or Associate Producer (based on experience level) for 7-8 months to work on a new history-related podcast for children (and their parents). We’re looking for someone who can work well on a small team, is extremely self-motivated, has good ideas and isn’t afraid to share them, and loves audio storytelling, and thinks about it in an interesting way. The role works to research, edit and write scripts, including fact-checking and editing scripts for accuracy. This role serves as a key conduit between historians and the show team. It assists in the production of the show, including working with young (typically under the age of 12) guest co-hosts for the show, as well as recruiting guest co-hosts and tracking release forms. They will also help develop new show segments and create the sound and style for these segments. They will edit audio, create web assets and help with social media as necessary. Throughout all of that, they ensure that all relationships and activities maintain the standards of trust and responsibility that audiences have for the shows from the APM kids vertical. This position is part of a cross-functional team, so teamwork and collaboration are a must.

Position Responsibility:
● Research, write, edit scripts including tracking and organizing research materials
● Generate and organize guests and interviews for podcasts.
● Work with subject matter experts to fact-check scripts.
● Develop new show segments.
● Coach and tape episodes with kid co-hosts.
● Help produce field pieces and episodes, including web content.
● Record and produce underwriting spots.
● Write and produce promotional videos and newsletter copy as necessary.
● Work with educators and parents to recruit kid co-hosts.
● Manage relationships with teachers, schools, museums, and other potential collaborators to help generate content and to use as test audiences for new content.
● Collaborate with the kids vertical team on the creative process that generates themes and story ideas for the podcast, as well as the evolving vision for the overall program.
● Participate in all creative aspects of the program.
● Collaborate with the kids vertical team on positioning the program to take advantage of the changing media landscape through editorial and technological innovation.
● Provide content for social media feeds, websites, and other online iterations of the program.
● Create unique events and opportunities for the fan club and member interactions.
● Communicate the podcast’s vision to internal and external constituencies.
● Collaborate with Marketing and other divisions in support of the podcast.
● Respond to listener email/letters.
● Assist with fundraising materials.
● Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
● Storytelling skills and an understanding of historical thinking.
● Knowledge of email marketing systems and techniques.
● Experience producing video, esp. for YouTube and digital distribution platforms.

Job Requirements
Required Education and Experience:
● Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.
● 2+ years of journalism, radio/podcast production, or similar experience.
● Experience in audio production and digital audio editing.
● Experience in writing for radio.
● Demonstrated interest in history

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
● The candidate should have experience using audio editing software, preferably Pro Tools (but this is not primarily an audio editor job and is not a sound design job)
● The candidate must be highly organized and able to meet deadlines consistently, and communicate clearly with supervisors.
● The candidate must have strong research skills and the ability to think creatively about how to dig up archival materials, find sources, and track down data and people for interviews.
● Should have experience or interest in working with children and educational subject matter
● Keen ear and ability to think creatively about audio
● Ability to write well and work independently.
● Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with podcasts.
● Ability to manage time and task load independently.
● Ability to learn new computer programs quickly.
● Candidate must be able to type and work on PC-based programs like Windows XP, Word and Excel, and must possess general computer skills, including Internet research.
