Let’s face it there’s no 100% believable method that accurately spits out the exact number of people actually listening to podcasts, or if after downloading, how far they listen. In recent weeks several reports have come out with conflicting listening data during the coronavirus crisis. Some saying downloads are up, other saying podcast listening is down.

Blubrry decided to release a report of its own, after also noticing the conflicting data. The hosting company looked at downloads in its database of shows from March and February. They concluded daily downloads decreases slightly. How slightly? Total downloads were only down one half of 1%. If this was an election poll they would say that’s within the margin of error.

Here’s some additional data from the Blubrry research:

  • The last week of March saw the sharpest decline compared to the previous weeks in the month. They say a sample size of one week is too small to extrapolate anything meaningful.
  • There was an uptick in podcast consumption on weekends.
  • Podcasts in the Sports category have decreased.
  • Podcasts in the Religion category have increased.
