NPR announced that students from Elizabethton High School in Tennessee and Bronx Prep Middle School were the winners of its first student podcast challenge. Nearly 6,000 podcasts were submitted, from more than 25,000 students, from all 50 states.

Students reported on climate change, immigration, and gun control, mental health, social media, drugs, and bullying. NPR heard from students interviewing their friends, siblings, parents, and teachers. And they say they heard a lot of great radio.

Here are the winners:

The High School winner: “Murderous Mary and the Rise of Erwin” By 11th-graders John Gouge, Jaxton Holly, Deanna Hull, and Caleb Miller. Submitted by teachers Tim Wasem and Alex Campbell. Elizabethton High School, Elizabethton, Tenn.

The Middle School winner: “Sssh! Periods” By eighth-graders Kassy Abad, Caroline Abreu, Jasmin Acosta, Ashley Amankwah, Litzy Encarnacion, Raizel Febles, and Kathaleen Restitullo. Submitted by teacher Shehtaz Huq. Bronx Prep Middle School, New York, NY.
